Default Rip off or what

My sons Honda Fireblade was stolen in Basingstoke, this was reported to the police they took a statement and that was it. six days later the bike was seen 10 miles from where it was nicked, the police were informed. This is where it all turns nasty, my son expected them to stay with the bike until he got there to pick it up, nope, they put it into there van and took it to a car pound, they are now charging him£150 release fee and if he does not collect it within two days its a £50 a day storage fee. What can he do about this ? nothing it would seem

As it was stolen surely your sons insurance company was informed and now it has been recovered you should be able to claim any out of pocket expenses from them as well as any damage done to bike. That is if he wants to claim from them.

That's the standard fee recovery agents are allowed to charge for recovering a vehicle under police instruction (it's known as a statutory lift), its certainly not a rip of as the recovery industry has been campaigning for years to get it raised

A lot of the time the agent looses money if the vehicle is never claimed, epically unclaimed uninsured wrecks that get weighed in for scrap

Also have to take into account that albeit a person says they will come and collect it, the officers cannot sit around with a bike/car awaiting the 'owner' to arrive, in an era where we are looking at Police and how public money is spent, is it feasible to use officers in this way.

As previously said, the collection takes place and this fee is recoverable via most good insurance companies.

Personally I would be more happy that it had been recovered, many are not so lucky

When my old car was broken into the police turned up about 6 hours later, the reason they said it took so long was exactly that, the officer was waiting with a stolen car for the owner to arrive. Althought this was a few years ago, they probably wouldn't even turn up at all now .

Once the police instigate a "Stat removal" they have to baby sit it until it's removed as they are liable for it, and most are collected within 30 to 60 mins....

Reminds me of this joke:

As I was getting into bed the other night, my wife told me I had left the light on in the garage. She could see light coming through the bedroom window. As I got up to shut the curtain (rather than go outside to shut off the stupid light), I saw there were 2 guys taking things from my garage. I immediately called 999, but was told that they didn't have anyone "in the area at this time," but would send someone over as soon as possible. I said OK, hung up, and waited one minute. Then I called 999 again. I said, "I called you a minute ago because there was someone in my garage. Well, you don't have to worry about that now because I just shot them."

Within two minutes there were 3 Police Cars in front of my house, an Armed Response Van
and the paramedics.

They immediately apprehended the burglars. However, the Officer in Charge was
really mad & said "I thought you said you'd shot them!"

I replied, "I thought you said there was nobody available."

Mmmmmmm, yeah right!!
