The danger is not necessarily lifting or reducing restrictions too soon, but the lack of understanding of why they existed.

In other confidence inspiring news we are to receive 400,000 masks tomorrow or some other day. Joy! oh Joy!, they are being made as we speak - in Turkey. Any idea how long that will last in the NHS? 3 days. I wonder where they got the cloth from. I know who the turkeys are
now. Er, don't we have hundreds of factories somewhere north of here, many of them making stuff from material that could be treated? Just saying.

Hi John,

Maybe it was about the same time that the bean counters took over from the engineers

Andy.

Default Bean Counters

I remember from my Air Force time, and working for them as a civilian in later years a process called LEAN. This was thought up by some dimwit Officer with an interest in money saving where instead of having lots and lots of serviceable items on the shelf, which would after a period of time require a Standard Serviceability Test, SST. You would just hold a calculated number of items in stock for times that they were projected to be needed, thereby reducing the number of SST checks and coincidentally fewer technicians, like me, to carry them out. Saving an absolute fortune and whittling the forces so far down that they would fit into Wembly Stadium, much cheaper, so pat on the back mr Officer and move up a rank. This was a concept called JIT, Just In Time. Sort of worked. Then they did the unthinkable, they LEAN(ed) the LEAN, this became known in the lower ranks, me included, as JTL, Just Too Late, where you could wait days or even weeks to get a part, this led to what we affectionately called a Christmas Tree. Usually it was the worst aircraft you could think of on the fleet, mainly the Tornado fleet, but not confined to that aircraft, God rest it's now scrapped soul. This was a double blow, you now had to remove the part, usually not easy, check it over with the old mk1 eyeball then fit it and test it. When the new one finally arrived you had to fit that to the Christmas Tree and depending on the state of that aircraft, test it or walk away and test another day. More work for the already overworked technicians.
So as you can imagine. My personal opinion of bean counters is lower than a snakes belly.

A quick question, from an ex-member if Lizzie's Forces. Re 'Lizzie's Forces, because your post suggests that you were in the Police Force/Service?

Not sure that the Police are actually the Queen's? The military make up HM Forces, whereas IIRC the Home Office own/run the Police. (As evidenced when it had to be the Police who escorted Diana Spencer to her wedding to Prince Charles)

Totally agree with your post, though, and apologies if I got hold of the wrong end of the stick!

LEAN was originally. Used in the car manufacturing world beginning with Toyota. The idea being that if you only use the minimum amounts of workers, materials and streamline everything then you speed up production and cut costs. A really good idea until things go wrong.
LEAN has been used in many industries, in an especially brutal way in banks, call centre and offices.
An interesting book called 'The machine that changed the world' by James Womak and others goes into this.
In RBS where I used to work they used LEAN coupled with aggressive performance management to bully workers and drive up productivity - usually sales related. As a senior union rep at the time I used to have to deal with the fall out of LEAN regularly.

Arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh.

LEAN, etc. etc.

Been there. Brings back some very bad memories. Absolute nightmare.

Interestingly part of LEAN is the idea that work is "pulled" through the process. So, you finish the bit you're working on and "pull" the next one to you and do that. Actually, very sensible. Allows for proper quality control and "no errors forwards" etc.

Great until there is a backlog at which point the "pulling" part of LEAN is conveniently forgotten and the work is "pushed" onto you.

Of course the 25% increase in workload with a 20% reduction is staff has nothing to do with the backlog......

Genuine question....

Why is it that "managers" who don't do the job and in many cases don't even understand the technicalities (or better still, the legalities!) of the job seem to be listened to when major changes are going to be made to said job?

Andy.

What lock down?

We live on the edge of the countryside and normally we don't see people for days/weeks, but all of a sudden its like Piccadilly circus around here.

Normally I could be on my drive working on my cars without seeing a soul, albeit the horses as company, but all I hear now is... ''Hello, nice day isn't it'' every five blooming minutes, I've never seen so many people.

I know the government have said to get exercise, but where are all these people I'm suddenly seeing coming from? Once this is all over I doubt I will ever see them again.

Its true, people are like sheep.
