Easiest way to describe it is it holds each gear a little longer in the rev range before changing up, there will be other parameters such as throttle position etc but that's it in a nutshell and yes you can operate it at any time

I drive with sports mode engaged most of the time, I find my diesel drives much better, the only time I turn it off is if I am going to be driving in a lot of town traffic.

Very true. And so satisfying. The other noise you can hear is suck...suck...suck.. from the tank. On the other hand, you can extend the range of options by using the auto box as a pre-select manual. Obviously, any subsequent malfunction is one's own responsibility.

The car holds the gears longer up the rev band, and changes down with less throttle opening. I think it also shifts faster and I know it will not engage the lock up in Sport. The shifting between the three different modes can be done at any time, running/switched off or standing/moving.
Apart from that, it does not make much difference, except the snow mode is rather pedestrian, staring in 2nd and shifting early to limit wheel spin. (you should be so lucky!!) Whatever you do it is still a slow box to change, compared to some of the others out there.
All in all not a bad box in spite of its age. Being Japanese, (JATCO mainly suppliers to Nissan but also Jaguar and others) makes it one of the more reliable parts of 75 package!
Jatco JF506E/F5A5 5-speed medium/large
VW Golf, VW Sharan, MG Rover, Land Rover Freelander, Jaguar X-Type, Ford Mondeo, Audi A3, Mazda MPV, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Where others use normal ATF, the Rover "version" officially needs a rare and rather expensive oil, if you will believe that! Nobody has ever, to my knowledge, been able to fully explain that!
