Default Akebono Brake Pads

I watch Scotty Kilmer on YouTube, the motormouth car mechanic who demystifies the car repair world for the average joe, opinionated & entertaining. Several times l've heard him recommend Akebono ceramic brake pads to cure brake squeal so after a search l found that they're very well thought of in the BMW world though not readily available in the U.K. & ebay sellers don't ship over here.
They seem to be U.S. manufactured & unsurprisingly they don't have the 75 on their list but as it shares the BMW 3 Series rear calipers, those pads are available. My current rear pads are squealers & are getting steadily worse so after a moderately quick search on the BMW forums & the Akebono website l came up with this link:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/ak...brake+pad,1684

When l found it the pads were $22 per axle set & l ordered two sets to offset the FedEx shipping costs somewhat but today l see the price has increased to $32 which is quite a hike. Whether that was my doing l couldn't say but it seems coincidental. In total l paid £67 inc: tax & shipping & they arrived today. They don't have pad wear wiring but l'm not bothered by that especially on the rears, l'll connect the plug connectors to preserve the circuit if needed. I understand the 75 front pads aren't used on any other vehicles but currently it's the rear pads l'm concerned with so will see how they are. I've no concerns with current stopping power, just the noise though l do have a lot of dust from the front pads which l would like to eliminate.

Anyway there's an option to explore for anyone with a hankering to.

There's a dam good reason why they are not sold in the UK and Europe.

They are not certified for UK and European markets since they dissolved their R and D department in 2020.

They didn't and never comply with ECE R90 pad requirements set back from September 1999. And to fail R90 pad requirements is absolutely abysmal.

Don't fit them. Cancel your order. You won't have brake pads that comply to UK or EU rules. From invalidating mot, insurance, all sorts never mind a crash investigation.

If you want low dust pads for a 75 or zt then frankly you won't do better than EBC redstuff which is fully none metallic and UK / EU type approved, and yes they do an option for 75 front and rear.

And rimmers are selling red stuff rears currently cheaper than what you paid.......

Thanks for the heads up, Colin, it would seem so:

https://autotechnician.co.uk/the-limitations-of-r90/

So back to the drawing board & on balance, l'm thinking of the Ferodo Eco's, no problems with R & D or U.K. certification there l think. A veteran brake company (as far as anyone can be sure of any companies these days) & I'm not sure EBC are the right pads for me, there are conflicting reviews out there as for every type of brake pad of course.

I quite enjoy chasing down car parts, l did a lot of it during the recommissioning of my A60 Oxford so went with the Akebono flow. Nothing came up about type approval, most of the info is from the states of course. They're paid for & delivered so not much chance of a refund so I'll chalk that one up to experience.

I've got Brembo Disks and pads and they seem very good... no squeal and good feedback through the pedal however they are not great with dust!

The Ferodo's seem to have good stopping power & very little if any dust.

I'll second that. Posted a reply from Federal (on the two-sixties forum) some years back now which part numbers to use.

Just for information: Ferodo's factory is in Chapel-en-le frith North Derbyshire, but they are owned these days by Federal Mogul. Ferodo has been active for a considerable number of years and do a lot of transport brakes, particularly trains!

BTW I've no connection with Ferodo

Thanks for those, l'll put my order in.

I have childhood memories of the London Ferodo bridges too, especially the one down Caledonian Road so it's good to have an automotive connection to the past.

There is still one at least on the North Circular (A406) as you approach Brent Cross I think.
