Default 1.8 Owners, mpg ? & LPG Conversion

Hi
I'm thinking about selling my 2.0cdt Connoisseur and buying a 1.8 to convert to LPG.
First off I'd like to know if 1.8 owners get the 36mpg quoted for their cars.

Secondly, any experiences that LPG (I know Bernard is one, are there others) owners could share with regard to pros and cons of conversion ie where does the filler cap live, not sure if I want something unsightly protruding from my car (that's what I'm there for) and, Is it really only a 20 litre tank you can have fitted?

I do about 900 miles a week (mostly motorway) so this fuel price palaver is driving me nuts.

Thanks
Bluey

John,

I have 1.8 automatic (non-turbo) and it takes around 19 litres of petrol per 100 miles. It is a lot but I mostly drive in heavy traffic in London.

Sorry, but I still cannot convert it to mpg...

Thanks m0sko. I work that out at just under 24mpg around town. Not a lot, hmmm.

32 round town wouldn't be too bad, thanks SMC. There's gonna be some variation in results here.

Any others do a lot of motorway driving?

I have a 1.8t and on the 360 mile round trip to Beaulieu my computer tells me that I averaged 42mpg.
I don't normally achieve this great figure though. Around town it sometimes drops as low as 22mpg.
I would say my normal average is in the low thirties.

It would be interesting to know what the relative costs of a CDT / CDTi are when compared with an LPG converted 1.8 / 2.5 / 4.6 75 / ZT....although I wonder whether a diesel owner would be happy with the lower torque figures...

My 1.8 is averaging 38mpg on a steady motorway run from Bristol to London. I did Bristol to Glasgow on 3/4 of a tank last year

Possible gross 77 litre tank (fill to 80%). My filler is in the wing as I don't like bending down. It would be possible to fit from a towbar or under the rear bumper. I can get up to 26mpg on LPG from my 2.5 V6.
I'm only interested in economy so I don't recognise the down sides!

Thanks for posting Bernard. Do you have pics of your filler? When you say under the bumper would this mean that it was out of sight and wouldn't affect the overall look of the car. 77 litres sounds good and 26mpg from a 2.5V6 sounds excellent. Where is your tank located?

At this point I'm still interested, more research required.
