Default Catastrophic!

Well, it happened to me, 3500 miles aross Spain and back without any problems at all, 10 miles to visit a relative and the head gasket fails!!
Could be worse I suppose, could have happened in Spain!

I brought my 75 and drove to Spain 3 months later, was dreading the thought of a breakdown while over there, but (touch wood) the car has never let me down to this day.

Like you say fortunatly it happened much closer to home

Compare prices with the Land-Rover alternative (it may be cheaper).

One thing I didn't like was that the man from XPart credited the Chinese for the MLS gasket and oil rail.

They was developed by Power Train for the Euro IV spec and were very shortly going to be deployed into production engines.

Hence Land-Rover having the same gasket and oil rail in 2006.

Full write up on the new HG can be found here.

An interesting development we were informed of during our visit to XPart was the new MLS gasket - seen here, pictured below. Part Number ZUA000080, the new gasket set consists of a steel gasket consisting of 5 layers. In the centre is a steel shim with swaged on fire rings - which appears to be very similar to the original gasket designs.

I'd like someone to do a long term test on the new X Part gasket. I'm sure its very good, but the Land Rover one is proven, by me for one, over quite high mileages.

I have the L/R gasket fitted in my 75 and SWMBO's MGF. Got one on the shelf for the time when my Coupe needs one as well.
