Undoubted masters of the bodge were British Rail locomotive fitters back in the '70s and '80s. A panel that was secured with eight screws went back on with four and half a roll of duct tape!

When I asked the engineer that carried out the work why, his reply was "I ran out of pink and grey"

If we had not replaced with the correct wire every time the circuit was checked at one end, the end that was blue and yellow people would have traced the wire from the far end. The colours meant something.

I seem to recall my dad telling me that a leather belt had been used instead of a big end shell or bearing but my mind could be playing tricks on me

Yes. A piece of leather to replace a big end shell is well known in dessert racing. Also, if you have a puncture when out and about in miles and miles of grass land ,you can stuff the tyre with loads of grass to get you onwards.Aahh the good old days.

Women's tights as emergency replacement for the old type fan belts.

These days it's a bit difficult with ribbed belts that go around multiple rollers.

from a similar era, cardboard/wood in front of the radiator in the winter, and engine 'pre heater' via a blanket over the engine (just had to remember to remove it before starting up lol).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

for bodges, at extreme levels, watch some Russian 'experiments' lol

welded crankshafts, multiple head gaskets (not multiple layer! lol), silicone filled bushes, carbonated petrol! HERE

Another 1960's VW Beetle bodge. In the early 80's my girlfriend had a Beetle with a rusted out driver's floor. I cut a piece of plywood to fit and screwed the gas pedal to it. It did the job until the car was written off in an accident a couple of years later.
I also made a gearbox cable retaining clip for my MGF from a roadside beer can when the original clip fell off 50 miles from home. I made it half way home before the bodge failed then I fried the clutch trying to start in second gear on a steep hill in traffic

I didn't know you can get tights with ribbed belts and multiple rollers. I thought they were just sheer silk.......

Technology and fashion have advanced so much that these days women are more likely to wear ribbed auxiliary belts for tights.
