Default Security for private online sales

Just a question for those who may have a suggestion or experience of sending money for goods.

I wish to buy an item off Facebook marketplace for around the £250 mark. I don't know the buyer and don't wish to send money on a trust basis when there are so many scams going about.

So what is the best method to use to carry out the transaction that gives security to both buyer and seller?

I do have a PayPal account but on reading their money back terms it specifically says does not apply to classified ads, plus the seller ( if genuine ) is just an ordinary bloke not a trader.

Any suggestions appreciated

Thank you

Pick item up yourself, if happy then pay in cash. If distance is an issue for you, meet halfway?

Yeah I get that but Northampton to Barry even going halfway would mean the cost of the item becomes uncompetitive due to petrol costs even if the seller would do so which I've no reason to see why he would especially as he's already knocked off the postage charge.

I didn't know that about classified ads. I bought a Lamborghini dealer sign a while back from farcebook for the same price so lucky it went well then.

That does put a different complexion on using paypal though.

Use your credit card. You are covered if it costs more than £100 up to I think £30,000. That’s what i do when I buy anything on the net.

Well I'd check it out yourself to be totally sure, probably a phone call to Paypal wouldn't go amiss to be sure, but that was my interpretation just reading the gumf on their site.

The other one that I was a bit taken aback by some time ago was going through 3rd parties doesn't protect your money if the goods are defective or don't arrive so again best to check out whats what.

I've sorted out my dilemma now after being able to establish that my seller is on the level.

Cheers

Unless you are desperate or unsure don't bother,
