Default R75 diesel coolant lost when weather cold

Hello Everyone!

I just noticed my coolant is leaking somewhere near the waterpump, when the weather is below/near 0°C. It leaks about 1-3 dl than stops(depending on temperature). Can anyone give me some hints why its only leaking when cold?

Thank you

The thermostat seal is the bit that often starts to leak on a diesel it's just on side of water pump

As is the O ring that seals the small coolant pipe in the thermostat housing, which is also a common leak point.

It probably stops leaking as it warms up and the expansion closes the small gap that it's leaking from.

Either that or the heat from the engine is evaporating the water as its leaking.
