Default Mirror Misery

Went out to my 75 Tourer earlier to find my nearside mirror folded back and at a close look the casting has broken.
In my Haynes manual I found the procedure to remove the mirror from the car and found one on offer on Ebay at a reasonable price but its not a colour match so my question is can the cover come off so I can use my existing one and if so how?

Yes the covers do come off, I took the white gold covers off my scrapper and resprayed them. You just have to carefully prise the covers off without marking them.

This might help , assuming you have the thinner "skullcap" type...…

Or for the bullet type, you need to pop off the mirror glass, then with pliers, squeeze together the tangs on the case and pull off.

My wife broke the casting on our tourer some years ago when she caught it on the bin when reversing out on bin day, Mmmm.

Yep, the mirror is easy enough to remove without taking the door card off. From memory you pull back the window seal, this allows you to then pull the black flexible plastic ayway from the door window frame where the mirror bolts on. The multi-plug jsut comes out with the mirror.

Fortunately, our tourer was a Connoisseur se so had chrome coverings which are easier to get hold of so didn't have to change it.

I belive that you spring the clips from the inside, then wedge something between the cover and the body to stop it clipping back into position while you spring the next clip. If you try to prize it off from the outside you will just chew it up. Never done it myself though.

I'm sure someone on here will put me right on the correct technique. I may be wrong.

Try practicing on the one you buy. ie the one you don't need.

Good luck.

Be aware, if you have the earlier "bullett" mirrors, you will need to remove the mirror glass and use some long nose pliers to release 2 (possibly 3) clips that hold the cover in place.

Many thanks for such prompt responses - I've ordered the used mirror so I'm happy I can use the existing cover

Looking at Ronnies post, it would seem mine wasn't prompt enough - 3 minutes too late! Must learn to type faster
