Default OBD2 Scanner

What recommendations are there out there for a reasonable OBD2 scanner. Not looking necessarily for a cheapie but want something that will read the Rover codes and whatever else they might be able to do. I have 6 75's ranging from 2001 to 2003. they are great cars but you need to know how to fix them yourself and a port reader would be helpful.
Thanks

Is free cheap enough? Then get yourself a copy of Toaf (use the search bar) and a VW KKL USB lead with pins 7 & 8 bridged - any kind of Windows will do although I would recommend Vista and above to suit your 2003. I've got Toaf with XP and Win10 (which I absolutely hate), although free you might wish to donate if you feel it's useful.

Good luck

Hi,

I use an ELM327 bluetooth reader (about £6-10 on ebay). And the Torque app on my phone and Xtrons head unit.

Have used it to diagnose faults on our Corsa and my sons mini too. Very cheap bit of kit to try out.

I bought the above, only used it to turn off the EML on a friend's Dacia Sandero I was servicing, did the job simply. In the garage now and always useful to have.

I second what vitesse said.

I have a Bluetooth elm327 thingy which does ODB2 with some free phone app, but I bought myself a proper USB cable, shorted the pins, and installed TOAF. Seems to have much more detail than a generic ODB2 device.

For extra geek points, I don't have a Windows machine, so am using my 2010-vintage MacBook Pro with the magic of WINE (some software which allows Windows applications to run on macOS or Linux).

I tried the OBD bluetooth jobby with torque pro on my navall3 but was surprised that it never showed any error codes and also seemed quite basic. However, i downloaded TOAF last week and with the recommended cable, was very impressed how easy it was to connect and read error codes which I did have, and has helped with some ongoing issues. TOAF is a very powerful piece of software, like a baby-T4!! well recommended rather than OBD readers.

Interesting, have thought about using dual boot on my spare MacBook Air but Apple seem to have complicated Boot Camp compared to when I last used it. I bought a half functional Lenovo Win10 (aren't they all?) from my Grandson and my son put some Win 7 mask on it to improve the appearance compared to the dreaded tiles but will have to take a look at WINE.

Thanks
