Default Windscreen replacement :-(

Just went out this morning to find a big crack in my windscreen. No idea how it got there - wasn't there last time I drove it a couple of days ago, and it's just been sitting in the drive!

Can this happen just because of age?? I haven't been driving over rough ground or anything... suppose it'll cost me a fortune to get a new one too (it has the rain sensor)

Get advice from an Auto-Glass specialist. I have known our cars with the rainsensor scrapped for this sort of thing.

Thanks John. Wonder what internal stress might cause it car's driven around pretty gently these days!

Hhmmm, looks like it's covered on my insurance, minus an £85 excess. Guess I shoudl talk to them next...

And of course, it's up for MOT in a couple of weeks.

Mine also cracked from the bottom right hand corner, when Autoglass replaced the screen there was a rust bubble in the bottom corner that you couldn't see, he rubbed it down and treated it before fitting the screen. he said the rust bubble had just expanded over time and eventually caused the crack.

He did put on the report that it was chipped and that that was the cause of replacement.

Thanks... don't think there's any chipping on mine. Oh well, will talk to the insurance/Autoglass and see what happens... pity I couldn't get them to replace all the leaky clips on the rear screen while they're at it

The stress theory makes a lot of sense - girlfriend just told me she heard a loud crack in the middle of the night (I'd taken a sleeping tablet), and thought our enormous cat has smashed something. She wandered around, found nothing, and went back to bed.

Guess that's the moment the 17-year-old stress went critical...

I'll call the insurance now

Seems to be a common theme - my windscreen cracked in exactly the same manner. No chips or apparent damage but again, i did hit a pot hole few years ago that may have started tings off. Autoglass did a good job of getting and fitting the replacement last year during lockdown and it had the rain sensor too. havent driven it far since then and MOT is booked next week

Underneath the windscreen are two support / locating bracket's for fitting the windscreen

My windscreen cracked from the nearside one with no evident other damage so that is a possible stress point that your windscreen has cracked from

Mine cracked in the South of France, no impact I can recall but it was 42°c one day which may have been a factor?

Well, all done - nice job by National Windscreens. Fascinating to watch the guy do it - I love learning how people do things I can't (there's a long list)
