Default Kenwood KDC-W7534U "Mecha Error" on USB

I bought a second hand Kenwood KDC-W7534U USB headunit for my car last week - it started off working fine, but after a while the (generic) 32GB memory stick I was using came up with "Mecha Error" in the HU, and wouldn't work in my PC either. I put an old 8GB Sandisk in and it worked fine for a few days until my 16GB Kingston one turned up... but now this says "Mecha Error" as well after working for a day.

Any ideas what could be up / how to fix it?

The internal amp is disabled (as all the speakers are active) but the faceplate does feel quite warm...
