Default scan

bearing in mind how long it takes ( 1 hour ) to do a full scan on windows 10 edge defender , i came across this article online for a scan. under admin supervisor type in the command prompt sfc/scannow does this rewrite startup files etc or what exactly does it do ? i have used it twice and it works , but i dont know what it actually does. as you are aware already .. im not techsavy ..

It is a system file checker (hence sfc) and only scans protected system files and repairs any damaged ones from cache.

It is not a full file scan of your files on the PC and is certainly not a virus checker.

Hello...

Just an update to this.

From Windows 8 , there is no cache is of system files. All system files are stored in the Windows Component Store (WinSxS) and hard-linked to the various folders and locations outside of this folder (e.g. System32).

If you want to do a full scan
Open Windows Security -> Virus & Threat Detection
Click Scan Options and select Full Scan
Then hit Scan Now

I reckon the standard settings are pretty good - never had a problem with viruses while running Defender but it still pays to be carefull what you click on :¬)
