What am I missing?

His feedback isn't bad - none of the negs are for the repair service.

He's averaging two unhappy customers in every thousand who buy from him.

Used it 6 months ago. Fully referbished key fob and it still works today. Am I missing something?

If I wasn't confident I could swap out the innards myself then yeah, probably.

It seems expensive for what he's doing, but then break down his costs

Selling price £20.
eBay fees = £2
Postage - £1.50
Materials - £4
PayPal fees £1

That leaves him somewhere in the region of £11.50 to cover his labour, which also includes posting the ad, replying to inquiries, packaging the keys back up, getting them to the post office etc. He's selling a one day turnaround - so he has to get it done the day it arrives.

You say people have ''fallen'' for it. I'd suggest there are plenty of people who either don't feel competent enough or who can't be bothered sourcing their own fobs let alone fiddling about swapping them about when they finally arrive.

Perhaps the better question is would you put yourself through all his hassle for £11.50?

I'm sure there are a few of us who have paid someone else to wash our car in our time - same principle really

I did one for my 75 and another for the ZT I had. Just spent the 4 quid on the unit and with a bit of faffing about with a dremel and some gorilla glue, along with a wee prayer that the chuffing thing would still work, it all worked out okay.

This guy is doing loads of them according to his sales ( I reckon about 100 - 150 a month) so he must be good at it by now.

Right so it's a new case then sir? no what if the microswitches are goosed, perhaps a component or two missing from the board, or perhaps it's been in the washing machine in a trouser pocket.

So a decent aftermarket case is circa £8, a battery 50p, proper tactile microswitches are 60p if you are buying in bulk, and return postage £2.08.....£11.18.

Yes I suppose you could say he's wiping your eyeballs, however you could always buy a cheap case for a couple of quid, get a small soldering iron, a pair of helping hands, a couple of switches and some fine gauge solder. flux, and some solder wick and do it yourself

Can I send you a couple of knackered keys

I'll pay you £20 if you can make them work and look like new

This is the main point surely ? - mine need doing and I have bought the replacement plastic outers months ago but never find the time or inclination to get on with it. Because as you describe in the first part of your post - it is a faff and I do fear that having not had to do it before - I may muck it up

So for me - I may well check him out as £20 seems reasonable to me.

Fair play to him really, lots of people are scared of electronic components and don't want to mess about with them. In truth I fall into that exact category but have just swapped over the innards to a new fob without any trouble but then it was just a swap, no " repair" necessary. I was still concerned I'd knacker the key and be unable to start the car! ( only have one set)
