Default Engine Cut Out when Fog Light Switched On!

This seems totally unrelated but it has happened twice when driving.
When I switched on the Fog Lights the engine cut out. Luckily I was able to safely pull over and stop. Then was immediately able to restart the car and drive on as normal - not risking the fog lights for that journey.
At a loss to connect the two but as it happened twice seems there is a definite link - which I would like to deal with urgently.
Any thoughts and advice will be very welcome and appreciated.
My car is a 2001 Diesel with just 108,000 on the clock.
I'm a worried member looking for any help please

John , it may be worth checking there are no corroded connections under the engine bay fusebox.

Fairly easy to remove it and carefully check the connections too.

Brian,
Thanks will check out the connections - I'm sure this is not too obvious although might be just what you suggest. I'll let you know what I find.
If it is a failing connection somewhere it may take a long while to track it down.
Thanks, John

I had a similar experience some time ago. Was driving when it became dusk switched the headlights on and the engine cut out, Switched the headlights off and the engine started up again. This happened several times over a period of time. Shortly afterwards the alternator packed up, replaced it and never had a problem since..

This could be a partial short or poor ground connection where the lights going on is enough to pull the feed to the ECU below it's working limit. A fresh alternator with a higher output means that the threshold is safely exceeded at any point. It does not necessarily mean that the issue is resolved...

the front fogs never occurred to me, and whilst I never had the engine cut out, but could there be an issue with the wiring over the chassis legs that could cause this? Like the image below, which shows my wiring below the headlight unit (I only had sidelight issues though).

I can't see anything obviously wrong with the fuse box or its connections.
The problem only occurs intermittently and only then when I switch on the front fogs lights.
I've run the engine with car sat on the drive and switched everything on (heated seats, all lights, air con, heated rear window) and all is fine until I switch on the front fogs when sometimes the engine just cuts out immediately. The engine will restart immediately after with no problem.
This has me puzzled as my logic does not connect the front fog lights with the engine operation.
Any more thoughts from anyone most welcome please.
Thanks to all for advice to date.

Not having experience of this in any shape or form, but if the fog light wiring is damaged, as in the photograph, could there be a damaged wire (not necessarily on the chassis leg) shorting somewhere causing your issue? The wiring image above is mine, and it only affected my sidelight, it started intermittently and then becoming permanent. The break you see was hidden below the headlamp unit itself. So obviously the vibration of the car would cause the loom to move, and be intermittent at first until it broke completely.

There is a plug for the fog lights (and the rest) behind the wheel arch on the passenger side, I am sure this is attached to another loom, which may or may not include something critical in running the engine (which is where I am guessing Brian was thinking). Perhaps it is this loom that is damaged. Logic would dictate that is where the problem lies surely?
