Default MOT failure - time to move on

I've been quoted £420 to get it fixed, but after having to spend some at Christmas I don't feel like chucking any more at it. It'll need tyres soon as well.

But I'm not really sure what to do with it now. It's in fully working order at the moment but its MOT'd runs out on 10th March. Is it actually worth anything to be offered on gumtree or similar? One of those random 'scrap my car' websites seems to indicate I could get £100 for it.

I noticed somebody offered there's for spares on this site, I don't want it hanging around for ages and I'm not sure if it would be worth it.

Any advice appreciated.

My advice would be to fix it, given the amount of trouble my other cars have given me at MOT time!
That's a relatively small list, and better the devil you know etc.

£420 seems expensive, and any car will need tyres!

Yep, not much wrong there ... apart from a price of £420 which is as good as saying 'we don't want the job' from whoever quoted that. £100 - £150 should be enough to sort the droplink and bush. and I cant' believe it'd be getting on for £300 to replace the whole of the front offside brake pipe! Shouldn't be more than an hours work for the pipe, and materials for that are cheap.

Changing car whenever it needs new tyres.... mmmmmm

Sounds about right. The only thing wrong is the ridiculous £420 quote!
If the bush is on the front then they're about 25 quid and the anti-roll bar drop-links less. I could do that in about 40 mins., because I've done them many times before. If however the garage is not 75 savvy, you may end up with a big bill, like your quote implies would happen. A local garage man I know asked me (!) how you are supposed to replace the rear rubber bush on them, since he'd been about 2 hours on it and still couldn't get a socket on one of the bolts ...

Cheers all. I'll double check on the price. It is a small, one man, garage, and he's always been solid with me. I also know that he works on various local 75s (when I went to pick up my car last time he actually gave me the key to a different 75).

Not much work to sort it out for another year and even at circa 400 with parts cost, 20% VAT the MOT 35 to 50 isn't so bad these days..assuming you can't DIY it

All of it is DIY poss, if you can.
Front brake pip is about 30mins -1 hours work.. ( unless you accidentally pull the fuel pipe of the ubp 😬😬😬🤣🤣&#129315 bushes anything from 20mins to 2 hours lol
And 1-2 hours for drop-links.
Your looking at around £100 in parts, if you change both bushes. Then labour on top. Once fixed you’ve got a few more years. Spent over £600 on my Contemporary Se last year, sounds a lot but could have bought something else that needed more work at mot. Betted the devil you know

Hi,

Just to follow up on this, the price was a typo in a text so I've gone with it and will have the 75 for a few more months.

Cheers.

I would be solid with you if you been paying these ridiculous prices.
All simple things to put right. Get another quote, fix and enjoy the car, the cost of a new car is not unsubstantial.

is it £420 to fix or less? As others have said, not a lot wrong.

Even at £420 what can you but for that that will last? Tyres are wear and tear.

There are times when it is worth spending more on a car then its value, because its cheaper then replacing it

Time for DIY skills?
