DAVANTI DX-640 tyres?
Anybody tried these tires on a ZT or 75 or Anything at all?
my local tyre place is quoting me £69 fitted and balanced with a DAVANTI DX-640 225/45R18 95 Y tyre. It comes up as there recommended tyre for the car on the website and there seem to be good reviews, and people are perfectly happy with them. Its either that or I pay £137 for a VREDESTEIN ULTRAC VORTI 225/45R18 95 Y. Also.. I've noticed on the fornt of my ZT it does have XL strength tires. Always used XL on the A6, but I do find the ZT a little 'skittish' on less than perfect roads. Is this due to the firm suspension and 18" wheels? or due to the XL on the tires?

I've been told in the past that Davanti are a budget brand related to Bridgestone/Firestone.
Recently I drove a Volvo that had this tyre on and they were excellent - although I only did about 50 miles, but on wet roads. The 225/45/18 95W DX-640 tyres are rated C for fuel and A for wet grip - not sure about longevity, though. As far as XL ratings go, it stands for eXtra Load. I wouldn't worry on a saloon - but I always use them on a Tourer.

I may go for it just to get me though MOT. I do know the XL is for extra load. On my A6 its an Avant quattro 5 Cyl Tdi . I found it needed the XL tyres (vredistin ultrac vorti) as it's a heavy car. The one MOT though.. The garage fitted Ultrac centrino's on the front which were not XL and not the same tyres at all. They made the A6 feel sloppy and had no strength in the side walls for such a big car and always looked flat . They also wore out faster too. So I changed them back to the XL vorti's . I'm thinking I should choose the XL versions of the Devanti tyres; as the ZT is also a big car of similar weight to the A6. ? Im just wondering is it the XL rating making the ZT a little tram line ish ?

I never had XL's on either the 75 or ZT saloons - just the tourer - and never had any handling issues.
Yes as you say the Avant would have needed the XL's, being an estate. I had an Audi 100 E SE saloon, that didn't get /need XL's either. They're lighter to begin with, and not capable of carrying so much.

£69 for an odd sized tyre that’s £100+ for anything other than a TSO (Tyre Shaped Object), they’ll probably be rubbish.

Davanti... Hmmm
Got them on the ZTT at the moment after a bit of a push from the tyre depot. Decidedly average in my opinion. Seem prone to shoulder wear, as if being run under-inflated. Have gone noticeably out-of-balance as they've worn. They did the job at the time, but I wouldn't have them again. |

Speaking from my own experiences and I'm sure many will disagree, but budget tyres are cheap for a reason. They may be cheap but they are no bargain.
Poor rubber compounds just perform badly especially when faced with cold wet road surfaces like we have for a high percentage of the year. They usually wear badly and quickly too as they are usually a soft compound to try and compensate for their inadequacies. They are often noisy, poor riding and react unpredictably to sudden inputs. I've had many different cars and tried many many tyres and this is the conclusion I've come to. If you're carful and do your homework some mid range brands are good value and definitely worth considering. Tyres are a minefield and no two people will agree. Budget tyres are cheap dangerous tat, and as for the new rating system, that's a load of useless tat too.
