glazed discs
Wondering if anyone has had glazed discs on their brakes.
I have an issue where the braking power on my ZT has reduced. The brakes are firm, pull me up, no sinking but lack bite unless i press the pedal hard. The ABS seems to be working if i slam the brake hard. Current kilometres is 145,000 and checking the service book i had the disc rotors and pads changed about 15,000km ago in 2017. There appears plenty of disc and pad left on the brakes still but i noticed the discs appear very shinny and smooth. I roughed the front discs up a little and the brakes seem a little better but maybe imagining it. Can a set of discs get glazed in 15,000km ? |

I had this on my car, 'feel' seemed to disappear at a certain point. I replaced disc and pads for 190 type, plus new fluid, so I cannot definitively say the fluid was an issue, but there was no improvement when I scuffed the discs prior to this. I had similar lack of 'feel' in my mothers clio, which after changing the fluid returned with a noticeable improvement Sent from my SM-A600FN using Tapatalk

Not sure what pads they used.
Re fluid change, could be an issue as ive never bled the fluid in the 8 years ive owned it. I have extracted the fluid out of the master cylinder and replaced that though the fluid in the ABS and pipes is still old. Ill need to get it off to my mechanic i think as i think this is going to be one of those trial and error things!! |

I would do a brake fluid flush as a matter of course.
The glazing could be caused by overheating of the discs/pads. I would check for this as the first step. There are discs/pads which are said to work well as a combination but not necessarily when mixed with other brands - Mintex being one such manufacturer that is regularly mentioned on forums. Your best option may be to just replace the discs/pads with a matching combination - I tend to use TRW on my Rovers and have never had any performance issues. Given that a complete set of discs/pads only costs around £160 here in the UK, this would be a worthwhile exercise if I was in the same situation. Last edited by MSS; 27th October 2021 at 11:02.. |

Seems such a waist re the discs and pads with so much life left in them but if either of them is the problem it will sort it. I was thinking it may be somthing like the calliper pistons sticking. |

A sticking caliper would of course cause overheating. This is why I would check that and address first.
