My experience is you cant get new ones, Halfords grommets have been used by some members but they were too loose on my 54 ZT. I sprayed the originals black and used them, looks ok but if your picky they are a bit blacker than the rails. Chris.S

I am using the Halfords 13mm Grommets and although they are not as tight a fit as the originals i havn't lost one since i put them in a couple of years ago and they look fine to me.

Yeah and the Halfords ones work out at £3.20 for four as opposed to over £20!

I removed all of mine (the three remaining that is) after a local dipstick stole one from my car on the drive. It is SORN so I just taped over the holes until I obtained what are to me some cost-effective non-oem replacements. A flexible rubber grommet for this application does not appeal to me so I looked at the soft-plastic options. I tried four different sizes before I found one that was close to fitting, none fitted out of the packet. The size I chose is 14mm and luckily in that size it came with a type of fitting which, with a little fettling, bears a closer resemblance to the fitting of the oem grommet. All of the sizes I received bar 14mm have the gripping ridges/rings around the circumference of the main plug/body. The 14mm's have four legs running down the main plug/body. So, off with two of the legs with a sharp knife or file and then make two grooves under the head in the remaining two legs. The grooves allow for a 1/4 turn rotation of the grommet to lock it into place.
At this point I found they were a tad tight with a little fine tuning needed to the modifications to get the fit to my satisfaction. But this was preferable to me as I wanted them to be a tighter fit than the originals, which are too loose and too easy to remove imho. I don't intend to fit roof bars so I did think of staying oem and gluing the grommets into place. Problem with that is oem is more of a target for future theft and the dipsticks who are stealing these items are unlikely to admit defeat to a bit of glue, which could result in a lot of damage and pain ... especially to one of these *e%#e/$ if you happen to catch one. The look of the ones I've used when fitted is not a match for oem, the profile of the head of the grommet is slightly rounded whereas oem is flat. This is preferable to me as it denies a thief an oem item and it might make the grommets less attractive for theft. When four of the same are fitted I doubt if the difference will be noticed by anyone other than an ardent enthusiast. They look acceptable to me and are no different in appearance when fitted to the pics some have posted of the Halfords grommets. |
