Driving test for manual gearboxes relevant in this day & age!
Will there be any point in a learner driver taking lessons for a driving test in a manual car in this day & age? Will it become a lost art as the upcoming new world order of BEV cars doesn't need a clutch or a gearbox or an autobox.
I've often wondered if the car driving test today has changed to accommodate the 'One pedal' driving with brake regeneration or the examiner asking the learner those ' show me tell me' vehicle questions about the EV whether they know their kW's from their kWh's

I think the answer is yes, a lot of youngsters will still buy a petrol or diesel. What will become of the classic cars if people start passing their tests in electric cars? Remember, petrol and diesel cars are still being sold new and will be for a few years to come.

I agree I think Petrol and Diesel powered vehicles will be here for a long time yet if the general public and legislation allows. I know both my sons who are in there 20's are both petrol heads, one has access to an electric car ( pool car at work) and has no desire to own one.
I think the government might have to push there date back unless something changes soon with the infrastructure for electric cars, I have heard so many stories of people struggling to get there cars charged or topped up and with the sales increasing year on year there will need to be a charge point on almost every street corner or they will be unusable unless they are relying on most owners to have home chargers. That brings in another problem as to if the National Grid can cope with millions of cars and vans being plugged in at 6pm every night through the week. |

Last time a drove a hire car it was a little Peugeot with a modern duel clutch box with paddles etc. It was impressive in its simplicity and made driving very easy. I remember thinking would someone who has passed an auto only test be able to drive it?

I past my test many, many, many years a go when working for the railways on a Scammel Trojan, always had to double declutch still do it to this very day. Rev Last edited by Rev Jules; 22nd September 2021 at 12:19.. |
