Water loss part two
With reference to my earlier post I am still having problems with water loss. On a recent trip the temperature gauge went nearly up to the red and the car went into limp mode. I have noticed the oil level on the dipstick has risen. There are no signs of any leakage in the engine bay, could it possibly be a head gasket failure. I topped up the coolant and the engine started as normal with no untoward noises. Any advice would be appreciated.

EDIT: I see from your previous thread on this it's a diesel. https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=315422 Did none of the responses help identifying the cause? It makes things a lot easier if you simply continue with that one. A raised oil level is never a good sign, but HGF in a diesel is also very rare. How much coolant has it turned over so far? Note that 50% OAT coolant can be incorporated into engine oil with little visible evidence. It becomes solubilised by the ingredients in the OAT. I'd suggest taking a small sample of oil from the sump and doing a 'crackle test'. This will instantly tell you whether the raised level is due to coolant getting into it. If it is leaking into oil, there would be some mayo evidence. Losing coolant is relatively common, normally from the expansion cap, either failed seals or not being tightened enough, or thermostat housing. Head gasket failure is very rare on a diesel, it has one so it is possible (and has happened). But it would last place I would look, especially if there is no evidence of mayo on the dipstick. Quote:

Hello Terry, When you get a moment, it would be very helpful if you could add "diesel" to the "2 lt" you have in your profile. Or even better, follow clf's example where his engine type is immediately visible. It makes it much easier, and quicker, for us to give you accurate advice to solve your problem. Thanks in anticipation. Simon
