Default Coolant loss

Just been out to the garage and noticed a puddle of water under Rory. I thought it could be from the air con - but when I looked under the bonet the header tank was empty and there were puddles of water in the recesses on the top of the gearbox housing.

I have not had time to investigate further this evening, but could anyone give me any pointers for the most likely source of the leak on thr right hand side of the engine above gearbox housing level ??

My FBH had a leak which left coolant stains on top of the gearbox, do you have one fitted ?

Hi

No, my car does not have an FBH - but of course the pipework is there to fit one so it might be that.

Thanks for the reply

Thermostat housing or the O ring on the pipe next to it are both known leak points. Easier to see looking up from underneath with the undertray removed and the car on axle stands, but visible from above. Neither would leak onto the gearbox though.

My top hose connection to the engine failed big time a few years ago so that might be worth a look if the FBH bypass is OK.

The pipework for the FBH has a bleed screw in it, that may be the cause of your leak..

Other than that, there has to be a join in it somewhere so the FBH can be fitted. That joint may also be leaking..

Could be any of these heater pipes where they press against the metalwork.

Put a bit of sponge in the vital places on mine.

Thanks for all the advice - and you were spot on. The leak turned out to be from a cut in the length of pipe that has the air bleed screw in it exactly where the larger piece of sponge is in Colverts photo. Because there is so much unneccesary pipework I was able to cut out the section that had worn through and reconnect it to the existing coupler. It even looks neater and I have made very sure it is not in contact with anything that might damage it again.

If anyone out there has a car with all the pipwork but no FBH then I would reccomend you take a few moments the next time you have the bonnet up to check all that pipework is not in contact with anything that might rub through it.

Thanks again to you all for the advice.

Pleased you got it sorted Rory but what's a FBH? I have one on my car (saw it today whilst pumping out the petrol, see other thread) but I have no idea what it is. Strange but as I traced the fuel line I noticed anti freeze on top of the gear box.

All you need to know about the FBH (fuel burning heater)
