Just switched from Windows Mobile to Android....
Gulp.... This a leap of faith for me, as I have been using Windows Mobile for longer than I care to remember
Anyway, my contract was up on my HTC HD2 about 2 months ago, and finally taken the plunge. Gill's got a Samsung Galaxy S2 which always looked very easy to use, so I've gone for a Samsung Galaxy Note, which is basically the same but with a huge screen! One thing the HTC had was TomTom, so now I am looking for a SatNav app. Free would be good, although happy to pay a reasonable amount to get something usable. Did I read on here recently that you can download Google Maps and use that, but without a connection to the Internet (using just GPS)? I don't want to use ££££'s of data! Also, can't seem to find out how much Voicemail pick up is going to cost. I know on the previous phone with T-Mobile this was the only thing that ever cost over and above the contract, and was 35p a go, so keen to ensure that if it also costs with Orange, I switch it off!

From (Google) maps on an android you can just search for where you want and just go into navigation by clicking the blue triangle. There's also a free navigation app on Google Play that's called Navfree, not brilliant but ok for a back up. |

Hi Dave
Made the same move myself - including to the Galaxy Note which is brilliant, but you do look a bit daft when making a call ! I use co-pilot live, its not free but its not stupidly expensive either. Have a look here http://www.copilotlive.com/uk/personal/android.asp? Its the best alternative to tom tom and you can download it from the play store.

Jim, does this need a network connection or is it "standalone"?

Co pilot is stand alone and they update pretty regularly too. Sygic also do an android app but there was a music mute issue with that at one time if you are also playing MP3's but that may well have been resolved.
My first choice, Co Pilot.

The latest version of Google maps has excellent navigation including traffic etc.
It also allows you to download big sections of the UK map while you're at home connected to Wi-Fi. Then when you're out and about you don't need to download the map All free.

It won't work as a true sat nav though unless you have Internet connection.

I have an unlimited data allowance so haven't used it without a data connection.
What doesn't work without ? (Just out of interest).

It can't keep track of your movements, it needs a connection back to the server to redraw the maps as you move. That's how I understand it. Willing to be corrected of course if I'm wrong but don't think I'm a million miles away.
