Solid flywheel kit ? or not ?
Hi All,
Just a quickie, anybody got any thoughts on why I should not buy this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3810130921...195%26_rdc%3D1 I'm pretty sure my clutch is starting to slip ( revs increase without speed increase on some hills in 3rd gear and I have to back off the throttle a bit) Thanks

I don't think solid flywheels are recommended. Usually it's the clutch and slave cylinder that need replacing. The flywheel is checked for excess movement at the time of replacing these. To add a flywheel would escalate the cost considerably, maybe at the expense of the quality of the clutch. Hope your problems are just the usual suspects.

I got a solid flywheel kit for my diesel and regretted it ever since. A vibration runs through the whole car when you put your foot down. Its bad enough for me to consider finding a good 2nd hand DM flywheel and swapping it back! Ruins the car in my opinion.
£138 is very cheap though, I cant remember what mine cost but it was a lot more then that. |

Definitely not. The DMF will likely be fine - we've changed many at our workshop and none to date have needed a DMF, or even been close.
A full clutch kit for the diesel from Borg & Beck with an LuK Slave Cylinder is what I'd recommend - many members have them fitted. Here they are: Clutch Kit - 75/ZT CDTi (Borg & Beck)

You can see if you're on your first Slave Cylinder (and probably therefore first clutch as they should be changed together) by checking the pipework entering the gearbox for the Slave - if plastic, it's factory fitted. If metal, it's been replaced.

A vibration sounds like something is not done properly, maybe an engine or gearbox mounting. A solid flywheel will not cause vibration if installed correctly. It would be worth having the car checked. |

Here we go again.
There are always going to be differing opinions about this subject but the general feeling for the R75/ZT Diesel is: There have been reports of snapped crankshafts after fitting a solid flywheel. People who have fitted the kit are not happy & wished they had stuck to the DMF. So, if I were you, I would definitely stay with the DMF. In response to Kaiser's post: Yes, a solid flywheel can & almost certainly will create a more aggressive 'bite' on the clutch which could give the impression of a vibration so I agree with Roverite. I don't think the discussion will stop there though will it ?!! |

I was talking to the garage the looked after my car before I bought it from the previous owner a few years ago and it turns out that my car had 3 clutches by 48000 miles but no DMF, I bought it with 52000 on the clock and it has clocked over 102000 now and needs a new clutch, the previous driver was mainly a woman(I am waiting for some abuse now) she couldnt get on with a manual car and now drives an automatic
