Default Diesel fuel pumps

Is there a difference in fuel pumps between the early model and facelift, my observations from looking at the top is the early one has a spout that’s straight and the later one has the same spout, but at an angle.

Hi, Main difference is mk1 has 2 pumps, In tank and under bonnet. Mk 2 has a single in tank pump. Early versions should be listed as 1999-2004. There are traders here that sell both and will be able to ensure you get correct version. D.M.G.R.S or JULES are two I'm sure have them. Lee

A large number of MK2s (as in facelifts)have two pumps.

It’s not the date of registration that has any effect on whether it is a two pump or one pump system but the build date,
Lots of Mark2 facelift models are still two pump

Mark1 fuel pressure tends to be around 3.7 bar
Mark2 single pump systems should be 4 bar

It is very specific which cars are fitted what fuel system layout, cars from 5D332301 are single pump cars, every diesel car prior to this are twin pump.

It's all about VIN, and not date of registration

Ok then, the in tank pump fitted the early cars have no internal pressure relief valve, and the swirl pot pick up is grey, and on single pump cars there is a pressure relief valve set at 420 Kpa, and the swirl pot pick up is light blue.

Also the left hand side sender unit is different, along with the cross tank pipework.

The underfloor pipework is completely different of course, and the pressure regulator on the high pressure fuel pump is different.

Does that clarify things slightly more?

Brilliant description Brian, definitely the best description I ever heard clear and concise.
The pressure relief valve is set at 420 kilopascal and you often find single pump systems maintaining 400 kilopascal at idle, but twin pump systems can’t produce these figures. Single pumps have a much longer life span too

Brian
When I stripped my early ITP down there were two valves on top Brian, each had a ball in it but only one had a spring.

The floating ball is the self priming valve, which is normally open, and closes once the pump has flooded with diesel and pressurised the fuel line, and the spring loaded normally closed valve looks like it is there for pressure relief.

Interestingly, the priming valve is the reason for the quarter tank syndrome when the ITP fails - once the level drops to the top of the ITP, the UBP sucks air through the priming valve and it is Goodnight Vienna.

Exactly which fuel pump do you mean? I have a choice of 4 on my car.
