Always used Asda oil in the gold tub changed it every 6 months or 5000 miles and everything was good, filter wise I always used Bosch or Mann , I once used a Wix filter on a volvo diesel I had and changed it after a couple of days as the oil pressure light would stay lit for several seconds after the engine was running, fitted a Bosch and it went out immediately. Now I have the S type I still use Asda oil but in the red tub as its a different grade, and still change it every 6 months as I don't do the mileage now.

1. Dot 4. 2. 1.5 lites is enough for a proper flush but I tend to use 2l 3. Eurocarparts do handy 1/2l containers of Pagid dot4 for a good price. I tend to use these. https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/c...SABEgJdtPD_BwE Last edited by MSS; 17th August 2018 at 22:46.. |

That’s great advice and a really good price on the Brake fluid - also 37% off this weekend! However, I need further clarification - Is the original brake fluid ‘mineral’ based, in which case synthetic would NOT BE SUITABLE, as I understand that it affects the various seals? Is the brake fluid - recommended above - compatible then? Not technical enough to work all of this out! |

Mobil 1 products are good. Are they worth the price? In a nutshell, no. The yanks are all over this with used oil analysis. If you're running it for 15000 miles, yes, put something like Mobil 1 in. It retains its viscosity and detergent properties for longer, but its shear strength and many other properties are not as good as cheaper alternatives. Anything less than that mileage between changes, don't bother. Buy ECP's own, or a budget semi-synthetic. The M47R BMW diesel engine really doesn't care and will easily manage 500k miles on whatever you throw at it. Contrary to popular belief, neither Home Bargains, Wilko, Asda, Tesco, or ECP refine motor oil. Nearly all of it comes from Tetrosyl, Fuchs or Castrol and it's pretty decent stuff.

What many do believe is that blenders blend a range oils of differing characteristics and qualities. The cheaper oils sold under generic names alongside lettuces, ladies underwear etc. are blended cheaply and using lower quality stocks. There is nothing wrong with paying for quality regardless of the level of benefit in a particular application. |

I've used triple qx brand on 5 or 6 cars never had an issue with them, they meet the oil spec as per the handbook. I change the oil as per the book, every 12 months or 15k.
