Have you recently had to keep topping up the cooling system? In other words, is coolant loss also a new symptom?

A classic iHGF indicator is over-pressurisation of the cooling system. Has any coolant been lost by ejection from the pressure cap? Have you noticed anything unusual apart from the overheating?

Is there any residual pressure when the coolIng system is stone cold? Is there a significant hiss when the pressure cap's slackened off?
Is there any sign of oil contamination in the header tank?
There are no doubt other signs and symptoms to look for but you get the idea.

So a bit of investigation may allow a diagnosis. You could just have a coolant leak, which inevitably leads to overheating. The 1.8 engine has well reported leaky spots, maily associated with the rubber hoses, their clips and what they're attached to. All need a look-over.

Thanks TC will investigate these

Just out at car now no mayo on dipsick or filler cap and no oil in coolant. The owner did say he had topped up coolant recently, and I can see it leaking from here

That looks like a hose leaking. Remove the hose and clips and check for damage/deterioration. (Although could just be a loose clip) Clean everything off, top up and bleed the system (Full mark is at BOTTOM of header tank) and then check for leaks. Antifreeze /fresh coolant will be needed at this time of year, or risk severe engine damage.

As TC says pressurisation in a cold system indicates HGF - so give her a 10/15 minute thrash at motorway speeds - leave her overnight then open the expansion tank cap - if you get a clear audible hiss of escaping gas it points to HGF as exhaust gas is in the coolant system - also smell the expansion tank to see if there are are exhaust fumes present.

Finally have you lost any coolant at all ?

Great stuff Thomas. It looks as if you've found the culprit. That joint has been "played with" before as it has a Jubilee clip and not the factory original clamp. Can I also see a shred of rubber wafting in the wind?

Simon

Hi Simon that’s the original clamp.

Hi took it for a quick drive last night obd was sitting at 86-90 whilst at idle, within 2 miles it was at 110 so drove back home and left it overnight, just checked it now and there was a slight hiss from coolant tank, could this be an airlock because when idling, the hose from the heater matrix to the back of the block goes cold? But if you rev it it starts to warm up.
