They can have stubborn airlocks - now its up to you but an old trick on these engines is to open the expansion tank and open the bleed valve then blow like mightily into the expansion tank - this will force any trapped air out hopefully. Bleed Valve is to the right under the throttle body near the airbox.

Some folk are wary to do this because of blowing into the expansion tank and the risk of coolant being imbibed so be careful.

Out of interest, is the heater digital or manual turn dials? Not 100% sure if the digital one on the 1.8 has the standard heater valve in the engine bay or not. If it does then this could be stuck partly open or even closed and not letting the hot water enter the matrix and push out all the air inside it. You might still get some heat with it partly open but not enough water going in to force all the air out in one bleed session. Going by your comment that the heater hose is cold during tick over but warms up slightly when revving the engine could be down to this also. Nothing to lose in trying it.

Hi Rob,

There is no water valve in the heater circuit of the 1.8, KV6 or M47R engines. Both the rotary dial and digital controls move air blending flaps to adjust the temperature. The matrix receives a full flow of hot coolant at all times.

That’s not original. A jubilee clip was not fitted at that place. An incorrectly tensioned jubilee clip will squash the plastic elbow over a period of time. The original clamp had a specific force when new which when the plastic of the elbow deforms over the years allows the hose to weep. Along comes heavy handed Horace and fits a jubilee clip and generally overtightens it accelerating the deformation.

If you do i always have a good measure of vodka or gin to hand in case of accidents - clear alcohol is an antidote against the effects of imbibing coolant - it stops any damage to the liver - just a precaution.

Nice pink OAT staining on that hose, I bet when it’s removed the OAT has worked it’s way into the reinforcing braids if the hose weakening it.

Yes - if you are lucky air may come out straightaway but give the expansion tank a good blow - you may lose some coolant .

I assume you are thinking airlock as you are not experiencing any coolant loss ?
