Default Someone at the DVLA is drunk

I've just received a letter stating that somebody has tried to apply for a V5C for Tarquin, even though I sold the car to Trikey in November. apparently if I don't reply to the letter in 14 days I no longer become the owner of the car and the applicant gets his V5.

What?

I would find that a little worrying, have you informed Trikey?

Unless it's Trikey himself, my concern would be, has someone tried to clone the car in question.

Regards

Mike

That does sound suspicious and I have heard of that scam being used before where someone has managed to apply for a log book for a car that they didn't own but because the owner either never received or replied to the letter from the DVLA then the 'applicant' gained ownership.

The fact that you got the letter suggests that the DVLA still have you as the registered keeper, so it's possible that if you have sold the car, with their backlog due to COVID then they haven't update their records, although if you've sold the car then the log book normally goes through the forms on the V5 itself, so suggests someone's applied for another logbook for it?

What?

I had the exact same letter from the DVLA last year about my 1965 Ford Thunderbird I sold in 2014
I sent the V5 new owner slip section off myself the same day as I sold it.

When I purchased a vehicle in February 2020, the V5c went to the DVLA. After about 5 months of no new V5c I sent another form to gee them up. No response. After about 9 months I went on the "chat" bot app (as it wouldn't matter they were working from home) and finally got things moving.

I have outstanding test reminders and SORN's.

Has the V5 changed? It used to identify the registered keeper of the vehicle, and not the owner. IE the person responsible for taxing, mot, parking and speeding fines etc. They used to state that they were not proof of ownership.

IF it is a scam, I would suggest it is someone trying to clone a stolen car for sale, as it would have some form of address relating to the person applying, and therefore traceable if used in crime.

Phone the DVLA via their phone number on the website, NOT the letter. It could also simply be a scam to obtain your details, as analogue methods of identity fraud is generally small and forgotten.

Remember, The V5 or Log Book is NOT proof of ownership of a vehicle. It just shows the DVLA who is responsible for taxing and registering it.

It took a while on hold but we managed to speak to an operative a couple of days ago.
