Default A what would you do question

I know these types of questions can be difficult to answer but go with the flow and that my opinion is accurate.

It is raining and there is lots of spray. 2 vans are in lane two, the second van tailgating the first, speed about 60-70 mph. They are not running together just that the first van is lane hogging. You are in lane 1 just under 2 seconds behind. You think that if the two vans have a coming together it will be huge.

Do you :-
A undertake and pull away
B hold your position
C drop back and then travel at the same speed but with a bigger gap

Me, no to A, no to B cos if they do have a crash I may also end up being involved and so C is my choice.

You have already thought if they crash it will be huge and so I am puzzled why anyone would pick option B.

Definitely C for me in the short term to assess the situation. If my dash cam is up and working get good footage of their bad driving. Even consider forwarding it to the police as they can now prosecute on such evidence as long as you haven’t posted it on YouTube first.

I say hang back in the short term because if you stay behind then and they do cause an accident then you will be between their accident and upcoming traffic. Not a good place to be sandwiched between.

Preference would be to then use the outer lane to get past them. I have undertaken on rare occasions in such circumstances - mainly on the four lane sections of M-ways where normal lane etiquette seems to go out the window, especially on the M25.

C every time, if the vans are in poor condition it could be a big mess so I would probably drop back and let them disappear into the distance.

A can be a costly way out as a workmate found out. He was captured by an unmarked police car, points and a fine straight away and because of the offence code his car insurance went up a lot.

Sometimes it is worth being late.

As my Police driving instructor said when faced with a hazardous situation is a choice "either back off or f-off" was his advice

If safe to do so in other words is to leave the potential accident to happen behind you not in front if it isn't safe then back off and give them plenty of room, then should an accident happen you have room to avoid

That of course does not mean to undertake which is not only dangerous but illegal, but to pass them in lane 3 if available but only if safe to do so.

well, on you tube option B was said to me to be the right place to be, how on earth the people decided that is beyond me but at least you have gone for a defensive action as I would have done if I had a concern.
