Default A/C clutch?

I have ACC on my 2004 Contemporary SE and replaced the condensor last year during lockdown. All seems well except, with the A/C switched 'on', there is a distinctive background 'whir' that disappears immediately the A/C is switched 'off' so I presume it's the compressor clutch (it's the original compressor with +160K on the clock).
At the moment the noise is not too loud, it's just annoying and I'm not entirely sure how it works but can the clutch be serviced or am I on the lookout for a 'new' compressor (and I suppose another re-gas).

I had similar issues John, posted previously, and I checked the clutch operation by doing the trinary switch check. Basically, unplug the switch, bridge the 2 wires closest to each other, there are 4, and the clutch should engage. You'll see it moving in and out each time you connect the wires. Check Jules' thread on testing the aircon
BTW, my clutch was fine, but there was no gas in the system due to a leaking condensor
