What have I done
Just had an enjoyable weekend working on Rory.
Fitted a new fan resistor - after which the fan ran on low speed again just as it should. Changed the vitron "O" rings and fitted an EGR bypass. I started the engine after doing all this to move it off the ramps and all was fine. Tonight I have re-fitted the front - taking my time to get the pannel gaps and bonet shut as even as I could - and when I stood back to take a look I was really pleased. So I got into Rory to go for a spin - and - he would not start. The IPS and lights came on just fine and I could hear the underbonnet pump working away - but as soon as I turned to the start position everything dimmed and I heard a couple of loud clicking sounds - but the engine turned not at all. I am guessing the problem may be with the starter - but I am praying I have not done something really daft like siezed the engine. It started and ran fine last night before I put the front back on - What have I done?? Now in a complete panic that I may have wrecked my favorite car - but I have no idea how !

Sounds like the battery to me from the description, you have mentioned, I got the same symptoms and as soon as I put in a new battery, everything worked as it should, and have not had a problem since. My battery was about 7 years old, so bought a new one with 5 year warranty, but like you said could be the starter motor. I would check battery first.

Definitely sounds like your battery is just a little flat. Not unusual at this time of year. Give it a charge and all will be fine.
Just make sure you don't keep trying to start it with a flat battery or you might scramble your key - see here http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=106447 LOL Hodgy you just beat me to it Chris

Well I put the battery on charge for an hour and then plucked up the courage to try starting again.
And Rory started on the button and ran as sweetly as normal. So I have not wrecked Rory with all my tinkering after all. Now feeling a little embarassed but too relieved to care. Thanks for all the responses - at least I will sleep tonight now!

Rory,
As Flyer says, an hour won't be enough. 12 hours (or longer) would be better. Simon.
