Good point - I often see cars, which are used on short trips have their exhausts fill up with condensed water. When first started you then get lots of steam out of the exhaust. It doesn't explain the oily smell though.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

i see it all the time when the cars come in for an mot ,they stink like an oily smell and we just run it rev it and lots of ater comes shooting out the exhaust and then the smoke dies down and then the car pass`es the emissions test ..all owners say they only do short trips...... you can even see the smoke changing colour as it clears through the exhaust...

I drive up and down the M6 for about 15 miles each day..............it really is a burning oily smell :-( I was wondering if it could be to do with the breathing system ?

Check under you engine cover, there are 3 pipes joined together by a 'T' piece, somtimes this gets brittle and cracks allowing the engine fumes to enter the cabin. I had to replace mine, below is the part obtainable from Rimmers for about £14

Although identical, the Land-Rover part is cheaper than the Rover part......

Hi all
Well, ive just taken cam cover off and yes the tiny pin hole size hole was blocked, so thats been cleaned...........whilst I was there I thought Id take the air filter off and check as much as possible........

Well when I removed the air filter housing I noticed a considerable amount of oil in the neck of the housing, but to my mini alarm, the oil was a milky colour, the last time I saw that coulour was HGF !!! Arrgghh

Please tell me this colour is normal !!

Again, this is the result of short trips... It's just the water condesation in the engine and the atmosphere mixing with the oil in the throttle body which, because of the angle of the Manifold tends to collect in the rubber pipe connecting to the Airbox. Although usually the amalgam here is mostly a light brown colour anyway under normal conditions.

I have a V6 2.0 and have the same problem it is especially bad if i move the car about 20 feet of the drive and park it up then go back and start it later to go out and the smoke is quite bad but it doesnt smell oily just fumey but looks like oil is being burnt as its a blue colour, I just put it down to a lot of oil in the inlet or possibly the valve stem seals ,but I am more inclined to think it is oil in the inlet .
