I've never known a faulty ABS sensor put the car into limp-home mode before although I suppose the O/S front could as it also operates the speedo (if I remember correctly)
In any case, going into limp-home mode wouldn't cause a 'misfire' as the OP has posted. Limp-home mode just limits how far the engine can rev & sets everything to a default value just to "get you home" The engine management (MIL) light would also illuminate. With an ABS fault, the ABS light would illuminate (sorry for stating the obvious there) I'd be astonished if replacing a faulty ABS sensor cured an engine misfire !! |

might sound stupid but have you checked the wiring harness at the coils end, pull the outer sleeve and rubber cap back and check along the harness for chaffed wiring, there are only 2 cables at each plug but have a look along the cables about 2 inches as they disappear into the outer covering, this can sometimes be a problem, and if the missfire is caused by this it can damage the ECU

Thanks synchromesh - will mention that to the garage on Tuesday. I am hoping that the problem is not too drastic.

Might be obvious but have the leads been replaced correctly as I believe that a pair should be crossed, if not would give a mis-fire like problem!

Grateful thanks to all the members who took the time to post some very helpful advice. I booked the car in at the Beech Hill garage (Rover/MG specialists) on Tuesday and they diagnosed faulty coils on cylinders 1 and 3 (front bank). They had parts in stock and fitted them. The coils were £144 each and with labour/Vat the total bill was £431 - much lower than I feared it would be. So I am up and running again which is a big relief.
Thanks again. Ray |
