Default Misfiring 2.0l V6

I had the plugs and air filter changed yesterday hoping that the problem would be cured but it didn't. The local garage suggested that it could be a valve problem and said they would price up a repair job and also a price for fitting a replacement second hand engine.Sounds very expensive!
I have had the car since new (12 years) and it has been serviced on the dot each year with a genuine total mileage of 65K.
Would the latest diagnostic equipment at a main dealer be able to be more precise about the problem? Are the local garage taking me for a fool?
Thanks

Hi and welcome!

I doubt it is anything as serious as a new engine or replacing of valves! possible but would be unlucky! Have you replaced the front bank HT leads and checked the coils? They might not be taking you for a fool but are probably not that experienced with the 75 and this engine. I would suggest you get someone who has a T4 (rovers diagnostic machine) for a check. sure someone who lives down your neck of the woods will be along to suggest someone who knows what they are talking about.

John

iF YOU CAN'T GET THE USE OF T4 THEN A CHEAPER MEMOSCANNER OR ELM WILL DIAGNOSE THE FAULTY CYLINDER, THEN TAKE IT FROM THERE. HTH

Ray,

Club member Lates runs a specialist 75/ZT repair and servicing business. If you search the forum you'll find lots of satisfied customers.

Your car is very low mileage for its age and has obviously been cared for. Whatever you do, don't let anyone ruin it with stupid suggestions like a replacement second-hand engine!

Simon.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to post a reply to me. Although I have been a member for a few years and make good use of the advice given on the forums this is the first time I have had to post myself. I think it demonstrates how reliable the 75 has been for 12 years that it has been fault free (up to now). The car is absolutely gleaming and looks as though it has just come out of the showroom.
Thanks again.

Congratulations on having had the car for so long ; you must indeed like it
You may well be the longest time of ownership for one car in the club ?
I have only had mine for 7 years so you make me feel like a youngster ! I do think these cars are for keeping , and as soon as it reaches the official 15 years old it will be off to the classic car shows and competing in the show ring

Hi Ray

I also agree with the above advice.

It doesn't have to be a T4 specifically to scan your car & any good quality scanner will do the job.

If nothing shows up on the scanner in the way of fault codea etc, I would then get a compression test done.

This will give you a better idea of mechanical condition inside the engine & if there is an internal fault (vales/head gasket)

As said above though, I very much doubt wether it is internal.

A couple of things that haven't been suggested are either Injectors & Air leaks.

I hope you gat it sorted soon.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for all the useful advice. I have found a Rover/MG specialist garage within about 10 miles of Reading and have booked the car in for Tuesday. They have the T4 diagnostic equipment and apparently a member of staff who has worked with Rover's all his working life. I will let you know next week what is diagnosed and what it will cost to put right.
I was interested in Chris's post about me being the longest length of ownership in the club. I bought the car new on April 28th 2000.It is the Club SE model and easily the best car I have ever owned.I usually hang on to cars for about 5 years but with Rover going out of business at about the 5 year stage I decided to keep it rather than take a massive financial clout.Really glad I did because it still looks a great design and is lovely to drive.
I will be in touch again soon. Thanks
Ray

You haven't described the misfire in much detail. My wife's Nov 2000 2L V6 ran lumpy in Dec 2002 at 21000 miles. I took it back to the dealer. They knew what was wrong straight away. They said it was the NS ABS wheel speed sensor. They said when the sensor fails the ECU goes into a limp home mode. They changed the sensor under warranty and it was as good as new.
