A little whine from the Aircon
I have noticed the last couple of times I have turned it on that there is a little whine when the aircon is switched on. It sounds like a dry bearing. The system has not been recharged for about three years or so. Is that likely to sort it as I understand a recharge includes a certain amount of lubricant for the compressor or is there something else I should be looking at. The whining is only apparent when the aircon is selected. It seems to work OK though my wife doesn't think its quite as cold as it has been in the past!

I found most Aircon units whine slightly, plus don't forget that the fan will start aswell....
And cold enough! Don't know where you are but if you want cold, I just open the window!!!!

Thanks for the prompt response - if the aircon had whined from new I wouldn't bother about it but it is a recent development so warrants investigation!

Hi
I have the same problem with mine. When I brought the car the Air con did not work. The dealer fixed it under warranty (inc a new compressor and matrix) and it now works perfectly - but the whine really detracts from the otherwise very quiet car. Clicking econ (which disconnects the air con compressor) means the whine disapears instantly. I have done all the other checks I have seen reccommended on the forum (fan is fine - with one of Jules gold resistors) but the whine persists. I would love to find a fix for this so if anyone has fixed a whining air-con system at least two of us would love to know how !

Aircon whines and whoops are due to excessive temperature differences within the refrigeration system. The noise doesn't come from under the bonnet or compressor or fan area but from the evaporator unit in the front of the cab. It's typically a sign that refrigeration is getting overloaded due to lack of gas or lack of condensing capacity. The first will be fixed by a recharge. If that doesn't cure the howl, then look to the condition of the slow speed fan and/or the condenser matrix.
