Default Solid Flywheel Kit

Hi guys,

I've currently got my CDTI in pieces as the clutch has given up on me. The DMF is on its limit of wear so that's got to go too. I'm seriously considering going for a solid flywheel kit to rule out further DMF problems and as I'll be towing a caravan pretty often I'm told I'll soon encounter problems again.

Has anyone fitted a solid flywheel? And what are your experiences of them? Any help would be much appreciated!

There was a per on here a couple of months ago who had a clutch change done at a garage.
The DMF was changed for a solid flywheel and the poster was not impressed.
Vibratory and altogether awful was his experience, I think he tried for a refund as he didn't ask for the solid conversion.

A search should bring the thread up.

I spotted that one but there was a possibility of poor workmanship being the cause of vibration and the guy never returned to clear up what eventually happened. :-/

TBH that's the only thread I remember with someone with personal experience, I'm surprised there's not more given the number of solid flywheels available on Ebay.

i know its not a zt but when my clutch when on my tdci mondeo i opted for luk a solid flywheel conversion and i couldnt tell the difference if my clutch needs doing on the zt i wont hesitate to go down the solid route agian as long as the parts are made by a good company

i think the reason there arent more threads is because the 75 and zt are not known for dmf problems, the ford duratec engines eat there dmfs on a regular baisis so alot of money has gone into the solid fly wheel conversions where as on ours the slaves and masters go but the dmfs tend to get replaced while the clutch is getting done as a "you might as well while its open" having been a member of the club for six years or so i can only remember 2 people actualy going for it and niether was happy with the results.

I would be happy going for a solid flywheel on the petrol versions especially the v6's, but for diesel I would stick with a DMF.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm still worried that the DMF wont stand up well to towing and ive not heard first hand from someone saying "I've snapped my crank!" or "I fitted one and it's fantastic!"

The v6 ZS has a solid flywheel as standard but people say that diesels are more in need of DMF as the power pulses are more aggressive and they help with smoother power delivery and it puts less strain on the drive train

The main function of a DMF is to damp out engine vibrations at start up, so it would be very unlikely for a crankshaft to snap through excessive vibration when the engine is running.

I believe Ford are dropping DMF in favour of electronic dampering via the ECU.
