Default Well That Wasn't The News I Was Expecting!

Following on from my earlier thread on the Social Forum, I'm now back from the quacks.

I woke up this morning at 4.30 and the big toe on my left foot felt like it was broken!

I laid in bed and thought that I must have slept on it funny and tried flexing it forwards and backwards, as it was clearly a muscle issue and nothing else!

Well after half an hour of doing that and it making no difference, I got up and turned the computer on and of course do what most people do and Google'd the symptoms!

This then lead to three posibilities, either I had broken my toe whilst asleep (unlikely), I had a painful bunion (couldn't see one) or I had gout!

Well I phoned the quacks at 8.30 when they open and made an appointment for later in the day and the Doctor confirmed my worst fears after an examination, that I did in fact have gout!

I've now gor some pills that I have to take twice a day and a list of foods that I need to stay away from!

Now as this ailment is common amongst gentlemen of a "certain age" I did wonder whether anyone on here has it and how they are getting on about controlling it?

Yep, I have gout and kidney stones, the two go hand in hand! As for certain foods the jury is out on that one, from what I have read it depends on your body as to which foods trigger an attack and which don't! Me I don't get attacks since the doc put me on Alapurinol for the kidney stones. IF you are really unlucky gout can spread to ankles (been there) knees (been there as well) and other joints. Best advice I had was to drink plenty of water and always have at hand strong painkillers and if you can tolerate them the anti-inflamatorys.

Me, the anti-inflamatorys gave me serious stomach cramps and other symptoms which put me in A&E, so I stay away from them, although I can now take Naproxen which is better and doesn't cause those problems!

Yeah, I'm prone to kidney stones as well! Had a 10mm stone blasted with Lithotripsy last year!

I'm quite keen on keeping it working, as I had my right kidney removed when I was 10 years old!

But thanks for the kind words and PM's guys!

Had a couple of bouts of gout over the last 2-3 years. Left foot main knucke to big toe. Went purple and all. Runs in my mums side apparently.

Dose of Naproxyn from the doc will sort you out mate. Only took a few days iirc.

Doc told me - nothing to do with rich diet, but if you get it once you'll likely get it again.
