I have my rear seats out from rain leaks and so hear a louder rear wheel noise that I am wondering about. From my reading forums we are supposed to try a different wheel, because sometimes it is the tyre distorted. And while changing the wheel we rotate each to listen for sounds. I am going to try the space saver to see if it sounds different.

I've experienced symptoms like this when the caliper carrier is worn allowing the pads to "chatter" up and down.

Try lightly applying the brakes to see if the noise disappears, and if so then the next step is to remove the caliper and see if there is radial movement between the brake pad and the caliper.

The cure if there is play is replacement of the carrier item 1 in this picture

Almost guaranteed the handbrake shoe has broken loose, either by detatching itself from the backing, or the locating pin has pulled out of the rusted backplate.
You may have lost the calliper locating spring (but this just gives a rattle going over bumps), as will the worn mountings Brian has indicated.
Have the disc off and have a look. If the backplate is stuffed (very common), you can use a long bolt and nut as temporary repair. Oh, and new shoes.

Agree with this one had the same on my e30. Rear handbrake shoe spring pulled out of backplate lots of clicking and scraping then a Big Bang. Drove home slowly took disc off and everything inside was destroyed.

Also getting a constant ticking noise on my rear left wheel on my MGZT-T 2 ltr Diesel 2005. The ticking started somewhat intermittent at first but is now seems there most of the time and I think is getting louder. I checked the tyre which is relatively new, as are the other 3 and it seems ok. Also jacked up the rear left of the car and pulled hard on the wheel to see if there was any wheel bearing play, but it all seemed OK. I spun the wheel several times and didn't hear anything, making me believe it's only applicable when the wheel is load bearing. Based on this thread I'll take the wheel and caliper off next week and have a look.
Also is there any indication that this noise could be produced by a faulty or broken rear spring? Although visually it looked OK.
