Seriously not happy with this. But I need to make the miles for work...

And they say 1.8's are engines to avoid. Not if you look after them they ain't .
I won't have a word said against my 1.8 on nearly 113k, and a 600 mile road trip at the end of the month.
Am I worried about my 1.8 ? Nah.

I can hardly remember the last time I owned a car with less than 63,000 miles on it! I think it was a Renault 16 in the early '80s, with 59,000 recorded miles. If it is still on its original head gasket, I would be tempted to replace it with the upgraded type soon, as a precautionary measure. I have seen too many gone pop at around 60,000 miles. I never understood why MGR never fitted the Land Rover improved gasket as standard in later cars, once they knew the originals had an unacceptably high failure rate. The MG specialist breakers I bought my replacement VVC engine from said they changed the HG on every 1.8K series engine they sold, unless they had categoric evidence that it had been changed by a reputable mechanic previously. Said they couldn't risk sending out a motor that blew within 6 months of sale. I don't have any worries about that engine, - it's just a shame my MGF body is so rusty!

OK, I am going to eat some of my words. This thread https://forums.xpowerforums.com/arch...p/t-21487.html from 2005 makes interesting reading, and suggests that HGF was a more common problem in early MGFs and Land Rovers (Freelanders), in part due to the design of the cooling system in these cars, and the position/design of the thermostat. Post 2000 cars (so most 75/ZTs) had several modifications on the 1.8 engines, which resulted in a far more acceptable level of HGF - comparable or better than many of its peers. Note- some obviously very knowledgeable contributors on the thread at this time, did not know of the concerns over OAT coolant, and stress the importance of using this in the correct proportions, as per manufacturers recommendations, with regular checks, and replacement of the pressure cap at the correct service interval. You live and learn! I now feel far more open to the idea of a 1.8T one day when my yearly mileage is much less than what it is now. Apologies to any 1.8 owners I may have offended.

Lol, thanks all. I know most cars wouldn't even think about breaking a sweat at 100k in kilometers. But I always enjoyed having only 5 digits in view.
This has now been changed, driving home from work put the mileage on 100.021.
If I tape over the 1, it might feel like I've got a brand new car. It sure still looks like one

@Teflon, thanks. I do what I can to take care of here. As an ex-detailer with his own shop, I have spent many weekends polishing the heck out of it. No photo's at the ready that really shows it off, but I do get many compliments my car. I still look back after parking it

@Comfortably Numb. I'm actually in the process of trying to come over to the UK to get the HG done. Other stuff as well, but also the HG. Partly because I have the vague impression that it is starting to show symptoms of early HGF.
