Preferred engine oil?
OK, I'm opening a serious can of worms here, but bring it on...
Which type(s)/make(s) of engine oil do you prefer for your precious gems? KV6 (in my case), 1.8... Experiences? Thoughts? |

Despite the 10/40 recommendations, my K series Rovers (1.8 and V6 2.0) have always been a bit tappy on start up in the winter. Since using 5/40 (which exceeds 10/40 specs) I have quiet engine startup (faster circulation ?). I use fully synthetic but it's probably overkill on my 5000 miles a year. Worm tin lid removed!

I think most modern oils are ok, it's the frequency you change it that's important, I'm of the opinion of changing engine oil every 6 months and use a good filter, it's a habit I got into when I had a diesel. I use asda own brand oil and have done for around 8 years with no problems, and I always buy it when it's on offer, I think it's made by comma but not 100% on that.

Just buy the right spec or higher for your car at the lowest price, look for deals everywhere, I grabbed 10 litres of fully synthetic from Carparts not long ago for just 17 quid, Asda are cheaper still when its on offer, most of them meet or exceed the min spec needed. Use a decent quality filter and change it regularly regardless of mileage.

I use triple qx, and have on several cars. Just change it once a year, never had any issues with it. You can get it from carparts4less.co.uk

Mobil 1 for me.
Some years ago (36ish) I recall Duckhams had a habit as looking as if a head gasket had failed on motorcycle air cooled engines. I think this was due to short runs and never getting very hot macafee2 |

Quite surprising replies so far; especially the own-brand/private label ones. How about you oil connoisseurs? Any other thoughts?

Once a year (7k miles only), previously Castrol GTX 10W40, then now to ease starting up with E85 Mobil Super 3000 5W40 (*).
I don't try being mean & looking specially for bargains: Lady Carlotta deserves the best possible. (*) EDIT: fully synthetic.

Whatever brand you decide to buy, ensure it complies with the ACEA specs set down by MGR. This is in the Handbook and defines the minimum performance parameters.
Providing the ACEA codes are met, it makes little difference whether it's from Tesco or an upmarket brand (other than to your wallet). The standards are met with a semi-synthetic, but fully synthetic oils have higher performance codes and a built-in feel-good factor. TC |
