Ever Given
The container ship that blocked the Suez Canal way back in March has only just been released by Egyptian authorities after coming to an agreement with the owners and insurers for an undisclosed settlement figure. I suspect any perishables may be beyond their best!

I bet they had to cough up a pretty penny for that fiasco.

Egyptian authorities initially wanted $916 million but insurers told them to get stuffed! They lowered it to $550 million, owners and insurers etc offered $150 million so pick a figure between them.

There were 2 Egyptian pilots onboard and in the absence of any wrongdoing on the part of the crew (if that proves to be the case) it seems patently wrong to me that Egypt can wash its hands of any responsibility. Shipping companies I think are entitled to something in return for having Suez costs and Egyptian pilots forced on them. If no fault is found with the crew then in my opinion Egypt should not only foot its own bill but it should be the one to pay compensation to all who have suffered adverse effect. And I think it will in the longer term as alternatives to Suez are explored and adopted - The International North-South Trade Corridor being just one.

The following article confirms to me at least that the two arguing canal pilots on board were the cause of the accident. Egypt should have borne the claims for compo from the industry and everyone affected across the globe. Click
