We spend a lot of money (almost a waste, it sometimes seems) weeding out poor quality parts from the rest - the 'naughty corner' became a 'naughty room' in the end!
It's just how it is - there's a lot of toss out there, and it's often sold with bells and whistles to draw in the public and specialists alike. Luckily these days we're a lot better at spotting it than we used to be. Does anyone remember the Mk2 Tazu Metal Master Cylinder? I certainly do... It's an ongoing battle that's only going to get harder for Joe Public as the number of manufacturers of parts for MGR bits grows ever smaller - several of the brands we purchase from regularly have announced they're stopping making the parts we love, so back to the drawing board. If it's Rear Sensors you need, drop us a PM and I'll send you a pair free-of-charge for the issues you've had in the past. We have buckets of ex-Longbridge stock we're sorting through, and I've found a good few in there. Genuine MG Rover, as fitted at the factory.

when I was in business we complained about the quality of chrome towel radiators that we were buying in at around the £80 and the supplier told us that these were bought from the manufacturer in turkey for under £20, but the problem was that as it went through the distribution chain before ending up with us everyone had put their cut onto it and changed the package so it looked like it was made in the UK, I assume this is what happens to car parts

Thank goodness that the majority of your vehicle is good quality to start with. How must it feel to pay tens of thousands for something and it deteriorates before the warranty has expired!!!!

The amount of steps in the chain is sometimes genuinely baffling.

Hi, I have to say that just having a manufacturer who is in business is not enough. I'd bought a Ford Galaxy which was 16 years old - Ford refused to touch it, not even to cut me a spare key. Said no spare parts to replace faulty locks, nothing... I have heard that with Ford if it is over 5 years old, they just don't want to know. I had more luck getting parts of any sort for my Rover 75 and MG ZT than for that Ford Galaxy, which has now been scrapped, because the clutch went.... long story (see my Swiss adventure for more).

I know what you mean about Ford, I had a prang in my 8 year old MK7 Transit last year and I was amazed to find how many parts were not available to repair it. The first dealer who was supplying parts to the body shop basically just said ''not available''. Luckily another dealer tried a bit harder and found all the parts except a cooling fan and shroud were available in Europe or Turkey????. I managed to source a new cooling fan on the bay and the body shop repaired the fan shroud.
I know of a Renault owned by a friend that is waiting for a part and has been for over a month, the dealer has given up and has told him to scrap it . He is hoping to get a part from a damaged car but the dealer wont fit it. |

When I moulded plastics for Nissan, we were instructed that we had to store the moulds for ten years after the production of a model had stopped.

Nine years after production ceases of a particular model is what manufacturers are mandated to carry all spares for in the UK
After that it is discretionary as to what is covered..........for instance I had no issue ordering a pair of sills seventeen years ago for a W113 Mercedes I was running. The car at the time was 32 years old Brian |

We knew this and the dealer just said no problem I will put it on back order then. The body shop who were doing the repairs had come across this before with an imported Ford that he knew the Swindon Ford dealer was a lot better at sourcing hard to get parts. In the end the front bumper was put on a VOR ( Vehicle of Road) and it arrived within 24 hours from Norway.

Io
My son has just replaced his ZT with a 1999 BMW 5 series tourer. The BMW dealer was able to supply a light control ecu and underbody steel fuel pipes in 24 hrs at sort of sensible for a dealer pricing. A spare key ready cut was £50. The dealer was very helpful with information and advice too.
