Can I ask why he would want to put it into Park to move it ?
Do you mean it will not come out of Park ? Will the other gears select ok: Reverse, Neutral, Drive etc ? Is the button on the gear lever working ok ? Sorry for all the questions but it may help get you a quick answer to your problem. |

Has the car got an undertray fitted. If not I have always been worried when under my auto that the cables and linkages can get damaged from kerbs or road debri. Have a look underneath antway.
I have never checked to see if there is a solanoid on the gear lever, or other electrical gizmo to prevent it from going into park while on the move. Craig

Just an outside chance (but its fee and only takes 20 minutes to try) it might be a computer glitch. Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, This has the effect of rebooting all the cars computers.
If the car has factory fit sat nav first unlock all doors, open bonnet and boot and wait until car electrics have shut down and in particulat red light on sat nav computer in the boot is not showing. Then disconnect battery for about 10 mins and then reconnect, If no sat nav will probably need radio code. Radios in sat nav cars not code protected, |

A couple of things come to mind.
1. The cable that is linked to the gearbox selector has some how slipped a little. 2 Something has dropped down in the in-car selector mechanism under the gear selector now baulking full fore/aft movement of the gear selector. 3. The parking pawl in the gearbox is defective. Does it fail to go into park when the engine is running/not running or both? Personally I would drop the front of the undertray and observe the gear selector mechanism on the gearbox. Mark the position of the cable where it goes through the selector mechanism, slacken it off and see if you have any further travel of the selector mechanism on the gearbox and at the same time you can check travel of the in-car gear selector. Adjustment of the cable is at the gearbox end. Last edited by rover54; 26th May 2012 at 21:32.. |
