Bones Has Overheated Again.....

2nd time it's happened since the rebuild. Dad's convinced the fan isn't working, since on both occasions it been when stuck in traffic for a period of time. Low oil pressure warning came on as well in both instances.

I have a spare fan in the boot, but I thought I'd post here and ask for a second opinion?

Yes, the engine (even a diesel) will overheat in stationary traffic with the current ambients and no cooling fan available. Is the faulty fan a 2-speed or an older 3-speed?

It was working when I had her because I used to run on the ipk temp gauge and in traffic you cpuld hear it kick in and watch the temp go down. You should hear it? I can hear it on my V6 and Toyota.

Mechanic might have done something to it when he rebuilt the engine I guess?

Seems to be intermittent, as I have heard the fan kick in on numerous occasions, although it does have a nasty habit of staying on for about 5 to 10 minutes after turning the engine off.

She's a Cowley Mk1, so I'm guessing 3 speed?

That is my understanding that it is doing that as it is getting too hot and an overheat situation, check the on board diagnostics if this happens to see the temp......

What Dave said! I used to run on the IPK as I was paranoid, but after Andy sorted her she didn't ever get drastically hot, and when she was in traffic the fan would come on and drop the temp back down. The only time I recall the fan stayed on after the ignition was off was when the HG went the first time - but then yesterday was so hot here that all the freezers in the local supermarkets couldn't cope, so I guess cars might be struggling too

That's a pretty indicative sign. Following a similar discussion elsewhere, I'll post this chart again - - -

This shows all the standard operating parameters for the earlier 3-speed fan (as fitted here it seems). The only circumstance that provides for fan cooling after ignition off is a heat soak condition. This means the engine's already way too hot at shut down and the stored heat causes things to reach 115C or more. Basically, the lower speed or speeds have probably packed in so you're relying on the emergency high speed as the only one working. I'd suggest you fit the spare fan or risk frying the lot.
