They have checked the transmission fluid level and that was OK, if I'm honest I dont know wxactly what the diagnosis is but I was told that a reconditioned box would be in the region of £1400. I was also told that it is in fact quite unusual for the gearboxes to go in automatics so as long as I exercise some caution I should be able to get a half decent replacement from a good ebayer that will extend the life of the car.

She's sitting there with 11.5 monbths MOT and given what I've spent upto now I really don't want to scrap her. Also it would be impossible to replace her for what it will cost to replace the box with a decent second hand one. I'm currently driving a 2008 Peugeot 306 and compared to my 75 it's a piece of you know what...

So if I buy a PR012 gearbox, as long as I get the ECU to go with it that would definately work would it? I do like the idea of replacing the weaker gearbox with the stronger one.

Once again thank you Gents for chiming in and helping.

Dave,

It's your decision of course, but are you sure about buying a second-hand transmission with unknown history and probably no guarantee to replace another for which you haven't got a reliable diagnosis?

Originally you were told that it may be converter failure; a reasonable supposition if the fluid level is correct and you lose all drive. On the other hand, no-one has ruled out a faulty solenoid which has happened to other members. If I were in your shoes I would get your transmission to a specialist to determine the cause of the problem; then fix that problem! (If it's the converter I can recommend a supplier which I have used for the same part.)

Ordering from e-bay is dangerously easy, but what would you do if you fit the second-hand box and 'EP' comes up on your car's display? But I could be wrong and you might be lucky.

Simon.

Hi Simon and thanks for getting back to me.

I think I may have found a half decent box about 10 mile from here. He has guaranteed its working and I'll know where to return it too if it turns out to not be the case.

I fully understand what you're saying though and is a big worry for me but I'm trying to keep the cost down whilst prolonging the life of the car. £1400 for a reconditioned box is an expense I'd rather avoid if possible though knowing my luck that's what will end up happening

OK so the donor box I thought I'd found cheap turns out to be useless. Back to the drawing board!!!

I refuse to scrap this car for a piffling gearbox!!!

Keep your fingers crossed for me please Gents.

I am of the same mind as Simon, in that I dont think finding an exact fault has been investigated properly yet.
I had a solenoid fault on mine, for which it only takes about 10 mins to diagose with a multi-meter (if you have the car I can give you all the resistances for the solenoids). The repair for me, only cost about an hour of my time and about £35 plus fluid.
If it were a torque convertor or a cracked piston, I doubt if it would cost more than a second-hand replacement of dubious history.
The gearboxes dont have many problems, but a few well known ones.
Its often too easy for garages to just quote for a recon box, because they are quite complicated machinary, and only specialists generally have the know how.

Mine demonstrated exactly the same symptoms but over a shorter distance ie 100 yards or so not two miles. felt like a clutch slipping and increasingly no drive. Accompanied by a smell which I now know to be hot transmisssion fluid

Hose from box to oil cooler had come adrift - a not unheard of happening I understand. All fluid dumped on the road so it was easy to see but if you had a smaller leak you might not have noticed.

Fix was about £35 for a hose and 5 litres of fluid about £30. Plus labour of course.
Just a quick thank you for this post. I have just been towed home by the breakdown services and was told the the auto gearbox ECU had failed. However, I thought I'd check the Forum for any clues/advice and found your post, which described a similar set of symptoms to mine. I thought it was worth a look, so removed the undertray to reveal a detached transmission fluid cooling hose and fluid everywhere. Hey presto an easy fix and a shed load of cash saved. Thanks again. Just goes to show even old posts keep on giving!
