Smile V6 2ltr auto 2001 fuel consumption ??

Hi Guy's & Gal's
Swimbo has just done Poole (Dorset) to Nuthall (Nottingham) and back, In my pride and joy. Return trip of 420 mls. According to DIP she averaged 33 MPG, average speed 38 mph, and used 60 ltrs of fuel. Car returned in good order, no bumps or scrapes, and hopefully no nasty tickets through the post. Good girl!
In real terms she did legal limit on all roads, probably 80 mph on motorways. She used 60 ltrs of petrol, and the distance was 420 mls.
That equates to 30 mpg (Ithink !). The car is fitted with cruise control which she will not use (frightened of it !). Would there be much improvement if she had.
How is that for a Connoisseur SE 2ltr V6 Auto 2001 with 2 Passengers ?
Would it do better if I stripped out all the extra walnut !! ha ha.

To me that does not sound too bad for an Auto... My old 2.0 V6 Tourer did not achieve much more than that on a run.. Hence why I know have a CDTi... lol

I started to cover more miles and the V6 became a tad to expensive to run...

I did a round trip of around 500 to Edinburgh and back (in a day!). Fortunately the roads were clear - I set the cruise for 60 mph (as measured by my sat nav), turned on the music (courtesy of HK) and drove an easy 500 miles. There was one period when I didn't touch the cruies control for over an hour. I returned 40.5 mpg - and it's a 2.5 litre auto!. I was more than a little impressed!

If that was the trip computer I would expect a little optimism as I can also see 41 on my t/c which equates in my case to 36MPG brim to brim. (2.5 Auto saloon by the way)

If the 40mpg is measured brim to brim then I am VERY impressed.

I thought the manual 2.5 was only capable of 40mpg, and an Auto even less?
That's some impressive figures.
I generally travel at 60 if i'm on the motorway, i'd love cruise for that purpose and get nowhere near 40.

Yes - it was a brim to brim measurement. There are two things that come to mind as a possible explanation. Firstly the roads (M62, M6 and then a lovely A road to Edinburgh) were very quiet so I barely touched the cruise control or the brakes come to that. I recommend travelling early morning and late at night, I've never known the roads so quiet. Secondly I've go some new Michelin Energy tyres which I understand give less rolling resistance - maybe they do??

I do get 24mpg around town on short journeys so it's not all wonderful..........

Hi,

Best I've ever had out of my 2.5 manual tourer was on a long run back from Germany last year. Driving with a light foot I achieved 34mpg which was a brim to brim measurement

Best I have had in the old V6 with C.C set to 56 on the M4 is 42 mpg between Reading and Swindon whereas in the CDTi similar conditions, the return to mpg was about 58-60

Mid 30's usually, not bad for the 2.5 auto.

I recently did a trip to Pucklechurch, near Bristol from Southampton via the A36, which is not exactly motorway driving and I averaged there and back 39.2 mpg. (161 miles with just over 4 gallons).
