Saying "cracked piston" with ref to the gearbox is like saying "head gasket" when a car over heats innit..
Check your solenoids first, and plzz report back. ... |

Picked this up on a Freelander site - may be helpfull
http://www.myfreelander.co.uk/Transm...ransprobs3.htm The adjustment of the selector cables may well be different on a 75 but the diagnosis may be the same. Also have seen a failing alternator may give similar probs. Hope this helps |

I thought it was the reverse that failed 1st with a cracked piston, no matter, he seems to know about it. Now, Gulp, just how brave are you?

Solenoid results
Measure my solenoids and they were all roughly the same apart from one.
They all read between 16.5-20.1 ohms. So from that I can make out from that is that they are all slightly out, or my cheap multimeter isn't too accurate (or its batteries are low). But the point is, they were all in that range. Apart from one: 18-11 = Shift Solenoid C That read 6.6 ! So if my meter is reading high, it should be even lower, more like 4 ohms. I've no idea what shift solenoid C does, but would that affect 4th and 5th gear? Here's hoping. But anyway, now what? Where would I get Shift Solenoid C from? And where does it go? tnx all Nick

All the solenoids are behind the black cover plate at the front of the auto box ( under the air filter)
Seemingly you can remove the plate without draining the box, there are posts on here showing the solenoids, have a look about

I would like to get to the bottom of this issue but its very difficult to prove anything. Just ask yourself why jatco specified a special ATF and not the usual Dextron. |

If 7045E is synthetic then it will have all the advantages of long life like a synthetic engine oil ?? I still prefer to use the ATF all the testing was done on. It would be interesting to know if 7045E is the equivalent of any of the Dextron ATF's. Its been suggested on numerous occasions that you should not use Dextron and if so, maybe not 7045E. Its difficult to understand the logic of not wanting to buy N402 from land rover diesels because it costs more when you are risking a £1000+ auto box. |

All sorted
All fixed by Automatic Gearboxes in Leigh. The receipt shows "replaced clutch 3/4/5" and he showed me a pile of rings, some of which were quite distorted. He keeps a pile of Jacto spares in stock because of the amount of time he spends working on them
Anyway, even though my wallet is lighter, its still cheaper than replacing the car and it has a 12 month warranty on it. Its early days, but it drove home superbly. Thanks for all the help.... Nick
