Question Auto Box Gear Changes

In general car driven steady, no boot down etc, just gradual speed increase; at what speeds does the car usually go up the box?

eg 2nd @ 20 MPH
3rd @ 30 MPH and so on...

Car should always move off in second when selecting 'D'. Only if booted or starting up steep hill or towing heavy trailer should it start in first. My ZTT changes from 2 to 3 at 12-15mph - 3 to 4 - low 20's and into 5 at approx 30mph. At low(ish) throttle.

Ah ok, in 5th as low as 30.

Reason for asking is that I've not owned an auto for well over 20 years and then a 3 speed box. Yesterday joining the M4 an idiot in front of me decided it not necessary to speed up to join the flow of traffic, so I'm doing 50 and increasing up the slip road and need to brake hard as this fool is doing no more than 30 and joins the M4. Traffic now coming up behind us breaking hard and swerving out to 2nd and 3rd lanes, of course I'm stuck behind said idiot now doing 30, when opportunity arises boot down and away to go, but I felt once up to 70 MPH the car needed another gear change, that said the rev counter was reading 2.2 so must have been in 5th or engine be revving much more.

The gear changes were so smooth I didn't really get the feel of it changing up. I took it to 80 MPH rev counter 2.8 ish and then dropped back to 70 put cruise on and relaxed.

My auto only starts off in 2nd if the snow mode is selected, always been like that in the 5 years of ownership

I also find they hang longer in gears when cold.

2.5 KV6 Rover 75, 5th gear 3000 rpm 90mph, or so i am told

It did make me wonder why have 5 gears if it always starts in second

I read start in second in snow mode.

It's just me getting used to the car and an auto box after all this time.

From a 1.8 non turbo manual to a 2.5 V6 auto there are some very slight differences in the drive

Oh and not and never will knock the 1.8 my car served me extremely well and was very sad to wave it off on Saturday.

As an aside, get your hands on the club VIS tester and check your VIS motors. they also make a difference

Thanks for the tip Dave and will do. I'm off to Lates in 3 weeks time to get the belts done and gear box oil change.

Mine starts in first and if on a straight road you can feel all the changes to fifth. 70 on the motorway as around 2000rpm. I keep easing off the throttle round town to try and get the box up in a higher gear if I feel it sometimes hangs in third, I probably just need to get uesd to it.

I will and I'm sure he'll give the car a good check over for me.
